Blog 8: Brainstorming for Short Essay

I have at least two ideas for my short essay...
The first is a story about my dog when I was a teenager. We lived on a pretty dark dead end and when my dog, which was a dachshund, would wiggle out of his leash and collar, he could run fast and get lost quickly in the dark. You had to listen very closely to hear him on the leaves or hear his panting. After several scary incidents in which we thought he would either get hit by a car or be lost for good, we found a solution. We began by going to my neighbor's and asking to walk their big black lab named Bea. Then we walk Bear down the middle of the street under the headlights so my dog could see him. Within minutes, my dog would race to Bear's side, start sniffing him and licking him while we slipped the collar back on. Im struggling with what it means - perhaps that if you love something, let it come to you instead of chasing it? Perhaps that you have to allow each creature to pursue its own love and its own nature?

Another idea is a story of my wife and I on one of our first dates. We rented a canoe and ended up going the wrong way on a river, ending up in a very shallow part where we actually had to get out and walk the canoe over the rocks. We never talked about turning around, just patiently got out and carried the canoe each time we hit a patch of rocks or a small dam. For a while, she actually dragged +me+ in the canoe. Eventually, she went to get help while I watched the canoe - a situation that made me nervous until she returned with news that the canoe place would come get us. It was a microcosm of our relationship - each taking a part, each playing their role and no turning back even when it was pretty obvious we could or should have.
